Most creators try AI once, get a bland first draft, and conclude it does not work for them. The problem is usually placement: they hand the model the one part of writing it is worst at — the finished voice — and keep the parts it is best at.
Stage 1 — Brief before you draft
Use AI to interrogate your own idea first. Ask it what a reader searching this topic actually wants, what the three strongest angles are, and what a typical article on this topic gets wrong.
Ten minutes of briefing removes an hour of rewriting later.
Angle interrogation
I'm writing about [topic] for [audience]. List the top 5 questions this reader actually has, the 3 strongest angles I could take, and 3 clichés that most articles on this topic repeat and I should avoid.
Stage 2 — Draft in sections, never all at once
Long single-shot drafts drift and repeat. Generate one section at a time against your outline, and paste the previous section in as context so the argument builds.
You also get natural checkpoints to redirect before wasting a whole draft.
Section-by-section drafting
Here's my outline: [paste]. Write only the section titled [section] in [word count] words. Continue naturally from this previous section: [paste]. Match this voice: [style notes]. Don't summarize or conclude — the article continues after this.
Stage 3 — Sharpen with a critic pass
Ask the model to critique your draft as a demanding editor before you polish it. Specific criticism is where AI is startlingly good — far better than at generating warmth.
Editor critique
Act as a tough content editor. Read this draft: [paste]. Point out the weakest paragraph, any claim that needs evidence, sections that repeat, and where the reader would stop reading. Be blunt and specific. Don't rewrite it.
Stage 4 — Humanize last, by hand
The final pass is yours. Add the specific example, the number from your own experience, the opinion the model would never risk. That is what makes the piece worth reading and impossible to duplicate.
A useful rule: if a sentence could appear on any site in your niche, cut or replace it.
The takeaway
Use AI for briefing, structured drafting, and critique. Keep the voice, the opinions, and the specifics human — that split is where the real time saving lives.
